Merry Christmas To All!

Greetings and Happy Holidays from all of us at Loyola/Notre Dame Library! The library will be closed in observance of the holiday season from 12:00 Noon on Friday, December 21st until reopening on Wednesday, January 2nd at 8:00am. Make sure to take care of all library returns and renewals before grades are finalized for the Fall term, and stay tuned for library news in January 2008 and beyond.

Database Trial - Aluka African Studies Database


Aluka: Digital library of scholarly resources from and about Africa http://www.aluka.org/

JSTOR is developing a new library of online resources about Africa and it is available for free through June 2008. The word Aluka comes from a Zulu word meaning “to weave”, which reflects Aluka’s mission to connect resources and scholars from around the world. Aluka is seeking to attract scholarly content from all academic materials and in many formats, and it includes materials ranging from archival documents to periodicals, books, three-dimensional models, maps, oral histories and plant specimens. Currently Aluka is developing content in three areas:

African Cultural Heritage Sites and Landscapes: Visual documentation of World Heritage Sites linked to reports, maps, field notes and other documents.




African Plants: Specimens of African plants with related images and data.








Struggles for Freedom in Southern Africa: Documentation of liberation struggles of several countries in southern Africa. (adapted from Aluka website and promotional materials)

Database Trial - Ovid Essential Nursing Collection

The Loyola Notre Dame Library is running a trial of the Ovid Essential Nursing Collection from now until December 5th 2007. This collection provides full-text electronic versions of leading titles in nursing and related studies - such as The American Journal of Nursing, Journal of Nursing Administration, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Nursing Standard, and Nursing Management.

To access the Essential Nursing Collection, click on the link and choose "Journals @Ovid Full-Text" Please send us your comments on this database by clicking on the comment link below or by emailing askemail@loyola.edu.

Franco-German Week Display

Loyola Notre Dame Library, in conjunction with Loyola College's Franco-German Week celebration entitled "Fifty Years of Dialogue: France and Germany" is preparing a book display on the Main Level of the Library. Look for the flags.

November Library Move

Step by step the library has been preparing for the opening of the lower level in mid-November. Customer Services and Collection Management Services staff have been shifting the books and journals on the 3rd Level to create more space. The library will remain open throughout the move. Here's how things will progress.

1. Shift the 3rd level books and put up additional shelving.

2. Move the books with call letters L-M (education and music) from the 2nd Level to the 3rd Level.

3. Move bound journal holdings now on the 2nd Level to the 3rd Level (bound journals that are at the Laurel Service Center will remain there until the completion of the project.

4. Move books with the call letter N (art) to the Main Level.

5. Move books with the call letters P-Z (literature, science, technology, military/naval, printing/library science), as well as the Juvenile Collection, to the Lower Level.

6. Open Lower level on or about November 15 and close 2nd Level for renovation.

Feature films can now be taken out from the "media browsing" area to the left of the circulation desk. You can come in, look through the videos and check them out for a week. Or you can watch them right here in the library. Come check it out.

New Lab Online!

Instructional lab 'A' is now open! All facilities are fully functional, including 20 computers and an interactive touch-screen display for Library Research and Instruction staff to demonstrate the library's resources and services. Many classes have already been scheduled, but there is room for many more as the '07-'08 school year progresses. Instructional lab 'B,' seating 30 students, is already being used for some classes, and will achieve full functionality within the next few weeks.

Historical Statistics of the United States

Available online through the Loyola Notre Dame Library, Historical Statistics of the United States provides statistics from colonial times to 1970 from over 1000 sources. It includes over 37,000 data series and a wide variety of topics, among them slavery, American Indians, and poverty.

Times Digital Archive: London

The Loyola Notre Dame Library now has access to a fully searchable online archive of The Times [London] from 1785-1985. The archive includes all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos. Users retrieve facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page. Check it out here: Times Digital Archive
